MACKINAC ISLAND – Rescue workers rescued five people and a dog from waters near Mackinac Island Friday afternoon after their boat capsized, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release.

The Mackinac County Operations Center alerted the Coast Guard around 2 p.m. on Friday about a capsized ship in which several people, including children, fell into the water about 200 feet off the Grand Hotel, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard deployed a 29-foot rescue boat from the St. Ignace station. Mackinac Marine Rescue and the Wyandot, a Shepler’s Ferry vessel, also responded.

All five people were safely rescued from the water within 20 minutes of the first distress call, the Coast Guard said.

“Thanks to our close coordination with local and commercial partners, we were able to conduct a quick and safe rescue of everyone involved,” said Lt. Alex Waide, Northern Great Lakes Sector search and rescue coordinator, in a statement. “This is also a good reminder of the importance of wearing life jackets; in this situation, all five boaters in distress were wearing them, which gave first responders the few minutes they needed to get to them in time.”
