San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan offered no updates on Brandon Aiyuk’s situation during his weekly interview with Bay Area radio station KNBR. When asked about it, the coach joked, “So much has changed. No, I’m just kidding. No new news.”
Shanahan apologized for the repetitive answers, but explained that he simply had no new information to share.
“I wish I said something different, but so far nothing has changed,” he admitted.
Shanahan, however, had more to say about the 49ers’ other contract dispute. Tackle Trent Williams has insisted since the start of training camp that he wants to receive a restructured contract that will likely include some guaranteed pay, as his current deal no longer includes guaranteed pay in the remaining years.
“You know, I’ve had a little bit of contact with him,” Shanahan admitted. “It’s been good to talk to him. I know we’re negotiating hard. There’s nothing new to add, but hopefully we’re getting close.”
The 49ers open the regular season against the New York Jets on Monday, Sept. 9 at Levi’s Stadium. Having Aiyuk and Williams available for the Week 1 game would be a huge boost for the offense and third-year quarterback Brock Purdy, so it’s important to get these situations cleared up soon.
