Jordan Mason played for the San Francisco 49ers Monday Night Football.
With reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey sidelined with calf and Achilles tendon problems, Mason was tasked with leading the 49ers’ running attack against the New York Jets.
He didn’t disappoint, using his physical running style to break through tackles and gain yards after contact, rushing for a career-high 110 yards on 22 carries through three quarters and scoring a touchdown.
Mason helped the 49ers launch long offenses and effortlessly won the battle for possession to keep the ball out of Aaron Rodgers’ hands for as long as possible.
Fans were thrilled by his groundbreaking performance.
Mason was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2022 after playing four years at Georgia Tech. Although Monday night was his first career start, he has shined as a reserve for San Francisco the past two seasons.
In the 33 games of his career before the 49ers faced the Jets, Mason averaged 5.6 yards per carry.
If McCaffrey is unable to play in San Francisco’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, Mason is expected to once again play a key role in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
