3 spectators among those injured in truck accident in southern Indiana

Four people are recovering from serious injuries sustained in a car crash Friday night at Wagler Motorsports Park in Greene County.

The 7:15 p.m. incident, in which a Jeep rolled over on its side after hitting three spectators, occurred during the 28th Scheid Diesel Extravaganza truck pull and drag racing event.

Two people from Tennessee, one from Ohio and one from Pennsylvania were taken to area hospitals in critical condition after the crash.

On Monday, an update appeared on the race track’s Facebook page: “The four injured are currently in different stages of recovery, their injuries are not life-threatening,” it said.

A 911 call that evening reported that a Jeep used as a pit vehicle had driven out of the truck pull assembly area and into the crowd. There it collided with three people, an off-road vehicle parked side by side, a tracked tractor and another vehicle before rolling over on its side.

Sheriff’s deputies, paramedics and volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene.

The driver of the 2007 Jeep, 55-year-old Jolanda Hargett of Tennessee, was injured, as were three bystanders: 31-year-old Marlin Zimmerman of Pennsylvania, 33-year-old Jared Weaver of Ohio and 30-year-old Joey Rank of Tennessee.

Since 2020, the two-day diesel truck pulling event has been held at Wagler Motorsports, which features a 1/8-mile NHRA drag racing track and a dirt truck pulling track. It is located four miles east of Lyons in southern Greene County.

The accident remains under investigation. Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 812-384-4411.
