2024 NFL Week 2: How to watch Sunday’s games and the outstanding matchups

CNN

Some teams are among the Super Bowl contenders, for others the season is already over; in the first week of the NFL season there are many overreactions from fans.

Week 1 marked the return of the regular season after months of absence from the field and also gave us the first opportunity to see some new (and old) faces in new places.

Week 2 began on Thursday night with the Buffalo Bills’ convincing 31-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins, where Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion after a collision with Damar Hamlin.

Here’s what to watch for in Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season.

During the NFL season, fans can watch games on television on CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, ABC and NFL Network. In the UK, games are also broadcast on Sky Sports.

The streaming services NFL+, Sunday Ticket, DAZN, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN+, Amazon Prime and Netflix also show games.

Both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Detroit Lions started the new season successfully and both go into the second week with many reasons to be positive.

The Bucs continued their momentum from the end of the 2023 season – winning five of their final six regular-season games and shocking the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card Game – with a convincing 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders. Quarterback Baker Mayfield appears to be maintaining the new lease of life he has gained since moving to Florida.

Mayfield has breathed new life into his NFL career since beginning his career with the Buccaneers, going from a backup in Carolina and Los Angeles to a Pro Bowler in 2023 after leading Tampa Bay to the playoffs.

The 29-year-old was rewarded with a lucrative three-year contract extension in the offseason, completing his journey from near elimination from the league to being a guaranteed starter.

And after throwing four touchdowns in the season opener, Mayfield views Sunday’s game against the Lions – an NFC heavyweight and the team the Bucs lost to in the 2023 postseason – as a “measurement game.”

“Yeah, this is definitely one of those games,” Mayfield told reporters Wednesday. “I mean, every week you have to play your best. If you don’t show up at this level, you can get beat every week. This is one of those games — on the road with a team that was in the NFC Championship, which is where we want to be, so it’s one of those games — you said it, we’re going to take on great competition (and) see how our guys handle it early on. You know, it’s a long season, but we can learn a lot from it.”

Detroit also started off victorious, but needed overtime to finally defeat the combative Los Angeles Rams.

And when the Lions made their decisive drive in overtime, they did so in typical “Dan Campbell” style: Their 4:41 minute offensive run over 64 meters was completed mostly on the ground and was the embodiment of the robust football for which the Lions head coach has become known.

For a franchise so used to losing, Detroit’s resurgence under Campbell has been something special. And after falling just one game short of the Super Bowl last year, the Lions are looking to go one step further this time around.

Since the 2021 AFC Championship game, the fates of Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes seem to be linked.

On that occasion, it was Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals who traveled to Arrowhead and defeated the Chiefs, laying the foundation for one of the AFC’s newest rivalries.

Although the Bengals QB has the edge over Mahomes in terms of wins – Burrow has a 3-1 record against the two-time NFL MVP – it’s the Chiefs quarterback who has the edge in terms of greater success.

While Burrow struggled with injuries, Mahomes developed into one of the best quarterbacks the NFL has ever seen. Last season’s Super Bowl victory was his third, and he also won his third Super Bowl MVP title.

In Week 2, the rivalry between the two is renewed for the fifth time, but both are entering the season with very different starts.

The Chiefs opened with a hard-fought 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens, while the Bengals suffered a surprise loss at home to the New England Patriots.

Both have shown signs of rust, but Kansas City showed against the Ravens that they could win a title. Now both will hope to show signs of improvement.

Burrow, in particular, will be hoping for a better performance after completing 21 of 29 passes for just 164 yards in the loss to the Patriots without scoring a touchdown or interception.

And the Bengals’ playmaker expects a much better performance in Week 2.

“The more football you watch over the course of the season, the better you get,” Burrow said after practice Wednesday. “Trends emerge here and there, and certain lineups in certain situations show how deep teams are playing against you.”

“It’s just that I learn a lot from my mistakes, I learn a lot from week to week, game to game, and I can usually apply that pretty well. So I’m excited about where we are now, about the training we had today.”

It’s time to see if the Bengals can turn KC’s stadium into “Burrowhead” again or if Mahomes and Co. can improve their record to 2-0 this year.

The Chicago Bears and the Houston Texans have started the new season with victories and both have reason to look forward to the rest of the game.

The Bears enter the new year with Caleb Williams, the No. 1 pick in 2024, at the helm. And while his Week 1 debut wasn’t pretty – he made 14 of 29 passes for 93 yards and his defense and special teams had to work heroically to overcome a 17-point deficit against the Tennessee Titans – he started his NFL career with a win.

“Before the game, it was a little weird for me because it was my first game and we didn’t really have anything against their defensive coordinator,” Williams said afterward. “But when I got out there, I could see it well. Obviously, I missed a couple of passes, but when I look back at the video, I was in the right place when I threw the ball.”

“I hit a few balls too, but I went to the right spots, saw it well, made some adjustments on the O-line and things like that, and communicated well on the sideline with my teammates and coaches.”

The Texans, led by their young superstar quarterback CJ Stroud, also started off with full steam and beat their division rivals, the Indianapolis Colts, in a hard-fought game.

The star of the show was arguably the team’s new running back, Joe Mixon, who was signed by the Bengals in the offseason and rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries in his debut. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.

“Every time he touches the ball, he makes plays,” Texans wide receiver Nico Collins said of Mixon. “You know what kind of athlete he is when he gets the ball in his hands. We have to keep pushing and keep blocking so he can shine.”

The two teams have different goals for the year – the Texans are playoff contenders, while Chicago is likely just hoping to improve with a rookie quarterback – and this early-season matchup could shed light on whether those two goals are realistic.
