The latest: The Batman will be in cinemas for one day on August 28th, with a taste of The Penguin. The Babadook is returning to theaters next month for its 10th anniversary! There is also a 10th anniversary celebration: Interstellar, The IMAX 70mm screenings have been postponed until December. See below for tickets.

If you love big-screen theatrical re-releases of classic films (whether you’re seeing them for the first time or the 50th), 2024 has been a year like no other. With a strike-disrupted release schedule and a lack of exciting films to watch, studios and theaters have banked on nostalgia and novelty, re-releasing popular films nationwide to lure audiences back to multiplexes.

The wave began in January with Francis Ford Coppola’s restoration of the 1981 cult classic One from the heartThe romantic and musical theme continued in February with Amélie And My beautiful ladyIn March, Pixar ended its series of debut productions affected by COVID Soul, To reddenAnd Lucas in cinemas. In the same month, IMAX launched its collaboration with A24 for monthly screenings, starting with Ex Machina.

Distributor Fathom Events hosts many of these classic screenings in conjunction with Ghibli Fest, an annual celebration of all of the studio’s feature films. Anime in general is ripe for these kinds of releases (like Cowboy Bebop: The Movie or Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children So far this year), while the medium’s popularity in America continues to grow.

May was an important month with most Spider Man Films, along with a multi-week campaign for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace25. Raw gemstones got an IMAX copy and The Crow turned 30. In June Spider Man Movies ended with No way home. Lola Runs was restored in 4K. And the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy all play one day at a time. In July we had a science fiction classic by Steven Spielberg (Eerie encounter), the greatest robber of the Disney Renaissance (Lion King), a masterpiece by Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke), the next in A24 x IMAX (Oasis: Supersonic) and the 40th anniversary of the fantasy adventure The never-ending story.
