2-year-old girl found safe after being reported missing from Lombard Hotel – NBC Chicago

A two-year-old girl who was reported missing from a hotel in Lombardy overnight, prompting a “significant” response from police and the dive team early Friday morning, has been found safe in a hotel room, officials confirmed.

According to officials, the girl was found by police around 7 a.m. in an empty room on the fourth floor of the hotel.

A family friend told NBC Chicago that the girl was reported missing around midnight. The girl’s mother had been showering in her fourth-floor room and when she came out she found her daughter missing, the friend said.

Police took the girl’s mother and father in for questioning as officers continued to search the area. Later Friday morning, authorities found the girl in Room 405, an empty hotel room, without a key, officials said.

The incident prompted an hours-long “active police response” from multiple suburban agencies, including K-9s and divers searching a retention pond.

Around 4 a.m., Lombard police confirmed to NBC Chicago that there was an “active police response” around the Extended Stay America Hotel, 260 E. 22nd St. in Lombard, near the Yorktown Shopping Center Mall.

NBC 5 reporter Sandra Torres reported that the “significant” police presence included the Lombard Police Department, the DuPage County Sheriff and the Villa Park Police Department, as well as the Oakbrook, Roselle and Bloomingdale fire departments.

The Bloomingdale Fire Department confirmed to Torres that it was dispatched to the scene based on reports of a person “in the water.”

Photos and videos from the scene showed multiple agencies in the area as well as several divers searching a pond behind the hotel and Greek Islands Lombard, a popular restaurant near Yorktown Mall.

Reporting from the scene, Torres said an Extended Stay America employee said police were looking for a 2-year-old girl who was staying at the hotel and was reported missing overnight.

At 6:27 a.m. later Friday morning, the Village of Lombard confirmed that authorities were searching for the missing girl in the area of 22nd Street and Highland Avenue.

At 7:05 a.m., the village released an update saying the girl was safe.

Lombard, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, is approximately 20 miles west of the city.
