Authorities said two men were killed and a third man injured near Hebron on Saturday night when a high-speed UTV crash caused power lines to fall and sparked a fire.

The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-vehicle crash with injuries in the 13300 block of Thayer Road in the unincorporated community of Hebron around 10:50 p.m. Saturday.

A 911 caller reported that a UTV was involved in the incident. Harvard Fire Protection District, Mercyhealth MD-1, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District were called to assist.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a UTV, driven by a 40-year-old Harvard man, was traveling east on Thayer Road.

The UTV, which was traveling at high speed, left the road and severed a power pole, causing power lines to be downed, the sheriff’s office said.

The UTV had two passengers on board, a 36-year-old man from Harvard and a 35-year-old man from San Carlos, California.

Sheriff’s officials said the UTV rolled over several times, ejecting the driver from the vehicle.

The UTV remained upright in a ditch and caught fire.

Both the 40-year-old driver and his 36-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, sheriff’s officials said.

The 35-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention.

The sheriff’s office said it is believed that alcohol played a role in the accident. The identities of the two victims are being kept secret until the autopsy.

The accident remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Division and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
