16 New York schools win the National Blue Ribbon for academic excellence

A total of 16 schools in New York City and five others from across the state were named winners of the National Blue Ribbon Award, the U.S. Department of Education announced Monday.

The award recognizes schools for their academic excellence and progress in closing achievement gaps between student groups.

“The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools raise the bar for our nation’s students and serve as role models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their successes, we look to these schools for inspiration as we advance education as the foundation for a better future for every child,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

The 16 city schools are among 356 schools nationwide receiving the award this year. Honorees are encouraged to fly a National Blue Ribbon flag on their campuses.

Schools are recognized in two categories: Exemplary High Performing Schools, which are among the highest performing schools in their state, and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools, which excel in reducing achievement gaps between student groups.

As part of the selection process, each school submits a detailed application outlining its teaching practices, school culture and community involvement.
