10 acre forest fire near Hannah Mountain

GATLINBURG, Tenn. – Great Smoky Mountains National Park received a report of a small wildfire near Hannah Mountain, south of Abrams Creek, on Monday evening, August 26. As of noon Wednesday, August 27, the Flint Gap Fire was estimated to be about 10 acres. No structures are currently threatened.

The Tennessee National Guard provided air support with fire truck drops yesterday afternoon and will continue to assist firefighters today. Additional air and ground assets will arrive at the park this morning and over the next few days. These include:

  • Operations Manager Type 3.
  • 3 suppression modules (7-10 people each).
  • 1 helicopter type 3.

Due to possible fire hazard, the following facilities are closed:

  • Hinterland campsites 14, 15 and 16.
  • Parson Branch Street.
  • The Rabbit Creek Trail from Abrams Creek to Cades Cove is closed.
  • Hannah Mountain Trail from Parson Branch Road to Little Bottom Trail.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted a flyover yesterday to assist in mapping and monitoring the fire.
