1 dead and 4 injured after gunman fires into crowd on parade route at New York Caribbean Carnival, police say

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) — A 25-year-old man died of his injuries on Tuesday after a suspect fired shots into a crowd along the parade route of the New York Caribbean Carnival on Monday.

He was shot in the stomach.

Police said the shooting was a deliberate attack on a group of people.

NYPD officials have details of the shooting at the Caribbean Carnival Parade and an update on the victim’s condition.

The suspect stood on the concrete barrier on Eastern Parkway and fired into the crowd of thousands watching the parade, police said.

“This was not an accident. This was an intentional act,” said NYPD Patrol Chief John Chell.

The shooting occurred near Classon Avenue and Eastern Parkway.

Most of the traders who were nearby at the time of the shooting did not even notice what was happening.

“I was just busy cooking. I didn’t hear it because of the loud music,” said Dwight Davis.

The booming rhythms of Caribbean carnival music drowned out the gunshots.

The police were already nearby and paramedics quickly took care of the injured.

According to police, four men and one woman between the ages of 16 and 69 were injured by the shooting.

The condition of the four injured victims is stable.

According to police, the victims include:
A 69-year-old woman who was shot in the right rear shoulder.
A 64-year-old man who was shot in the right arm.
A 36-year-old man who was shot in the head.
A 16-year-old man was shot in the left arm.

The identity of the deceased 25-year-old man has not yet been disclosed.

At least one person is still being sought.

The suspect is described as a man in his 20s, dressed all in brown, with oil/paint stains on his shirt and wearing a black bandana, who fled on foot west along Classon Avenue, police said.

Chell said the department has already put in an incredible amount of work throughout the holiday weekend to keep the area as safe as possible for J’ouvert and the parade.

“Today, however, one person specifically targeted a group of people and tried to ruin everyone’s day,” Chell said.

Police are asking the public to submit any videos of the incident that may be helpful to their investigation.
