1 dead after accident between semi-trailer and train

SHERMAN, Wisconsin – At 2:08 p.m. Wednesday, Sheboygan County Emergency Crews received reports of an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a train in the city of Sherman in southwest Sheboygan County.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said the accident occurred in the west 5100 block of Abbot Drive.

SCSO said when officers arrived at the scene, they found a semi-truck with a tanker attached lying on its side in a ditch. The truck had been hauling about 5,000 gallons of manure. The semi was traveling west on Abbot Drive and was crossing a railroad crossing.

While crossing, the semi-trailer was struck by a northbound Wisconsin Southern train.

According to SCSO, the driver of the semi-trailer died as a result of the accident. The 66-year-old man was from Kewaskum. Officials did not release his name.

No other injuries were reported, according to SCSO.

The locomotive and six of the estimated 22 wagons on the train were derailed. Only one derailed wagon lost some of its plastic granules.

According to SCSO, there was a “Yield” sign at the railroad crossing on Abbott Drive.

While the crash investigation is ongoing, Abbott Drive will be closed westbound from State Highway 57. Vehicles coming from the west will have to turn south onto Allen Road. Officials said the investigation could take several days and reopening is also contingent on repairs.

According to SCSO, there is currently no danger to the public.
