The Hawaii Police Department is pleased to announce that Police Communications Officer Nashly Leslie has been named Dispatcher of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2024 (January, February, March) and Police Communications Officer Kainapau “Ka’ina” Mossman has been named Dispatcher of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2024 (April, May, June).

Leslie, who served as a communications officer with the Hawaii Police Department for 16 years, was honored for her dedication and innovation in leading projects that enable smoother operations of the communications department.

Known for her enthusiasm and ability to work as a team, Leslie volunteered to be an assistant supervisor on March 17, 2024, knowing she would be working 20 hours straight, two full shifts and half of a third shift. Then, the next morning, she returned to her regular shift at 6:45 a.m. with a positive attitude.

In addition to her ongoing tasks, one of her recent projects was to update all directories on every console, an important but massive project.

Police Communications Officer Kainapau “Ka’ina” Mossman was honored for her compassionate efforts in assisting a man who was experiencing a mental health crisis. A police communications officer since December 2022, Mossman is distinguished by her calm demeanor and positive attitude, helping wherever needed.

On June 26, 2024, Mossman received a call from a distressed man who stated he had undiagnosed mental health issues and felt he had to “do something.” Fearing he might harm himself or others, Mossman stayed on the line with him for 10-15 minutes until officers arrived on scene. She repeatedly assured the man that he would be OK, showing concern and compassion. After officers arrived on scene, the man was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was treated for his mental health issues.
