Nelly Furtado had the song of the summer in 2006 when “Maneater” topped the UK charts – and now she’s back with “the best song of 2024”.

The 45-year-old Canadian-Portuguese singer and songwriter had her breakthrough in the early 2000s with her successful debut single “I’m Like a Bird” and the follow-up song “Turn Off the Light”.

A major re-orientation in the mid-2000s, which saw her collaborate with R&B super-producer Timbaland, saw her rise to international fame with a string of worldwide hits.

Since then, she has recorded a number of English and Spanish-language albums, but since 2017 she has clearly retreated from the spotlight.

Now, after a series of new promotional singles over the summer, the Promiscuous singer has returned with her seventh studio album, aptly titled “7.”

And one of the tracks on this brand new album caught the attention of Nelly fans everywhere after it was released as a last-minute promotional single, with one fan calling it “the song of the year.”

“Honesty,” written in collaboration with British DJ and musician Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, is track five on Friday’s release.

@SeanBScHMN responded to X with glee: “Nelly Furtado gave us a song for the gays/song of the year (with Honesty) on this new (fucking fantastic) album!”

@SoneSelenatorSK joined Sean in singing the high notes of Nelly’s new hit, saying ‘Honesty’ is so good it gives me summer vibes – what a blast’ and tagged the singer in his message.

Meanwhile, @BloodyRick said: “7 by Nelly Furtado comes out at midnight – this was a long time coming girl. Floodgate and Honesty are my favorite gems.”

After the release of Honesty, which came right around the time 7 itself was about to be released, @HeldieHelder screamed: “OH MY GOD, HONESTY IS AWESOME!”

On a day when the likes of Katy Perry, Future and Jamie xx released new music, “Honesty” seems to have emerged as a big favorite among pop fans.

Nelly found overnight success in the early 2000s; her debut single “I’m Like a Bird” reached the top 5 in the UK and the Billboard top 10 in the US.

After her second album, Folklore, failed to match the success of her debut, Whoa! Nelly, she left DreamWorks Music and signed with Mosley and Interscope, owned by Timbaland.

Her third album, Loose, brought her two number one hits in the US (Promiscuous and Say It Right) and one number one hit in the UK (Maneater). Her collaboration with Timbaland also brought her a second number one hit, “Give It to Me”.

Together with British singer-songwriter James Morrison, she also produced a major hit entitled “Broken Strings,” which was one of the biggest hits in the UK in 2008.

Away from music, Nelly was married to Demacio Castellon between 2008 and 2016. She has three children – one with her former boyfriend Jasper Gahunia and two with Odd Future rapper Hodgy Beats (now known as Jerry).
